From unstable grid to damaged equipment

Camping De Blauwe Haan (Blue Rooster) is a nature-focused campsite where families go to relax. But behind the peaceful setting, the owners were facing a serious technical challenge: the local grid suffered from frequent voltage fluctuations.

Over time, these grid problems damaged inverters and around 60 of the campsite’s solar panels. On top of that, the existing electricity contract was expensive and inflexible. The owners needed a solution that would stabilise their supply, protect sensitive equipment, and improve the business case for renewable energy.

The solution: a smart ESS based on Victron and BasenGreen

Working with system integrator SmartVolt and Victron Energy, the campsite decided to build an advanced Energy Storage System (ESS) that could address all of these issues at once.

The new system combines:

  • 132 new solar panels added to the 30 existing modules on site

  • 24 BasenGreen lithium batteries of 6 kWh each – delivering around 144 kWh of usable storage

  • Three Victron MultiPlus-II 15 kVA inverters in a three-phase configuration

  • A Fronius PV inverter and Victron MPPT RS SmartSolar charge controller for optimal solar harvesting

  • EV chargers to serve the growing number of electric vehicles arriving at the campsite

  • A 2,200-litre hot-water tank, heated with surplus solar energy

On top of the hardware, the system is integrated with Node-RED and Loxone to orchestrate loads, manage charging, and make sure solar energy and storage are used as intelligently as possible.

Results: lower costs, higher reliability, better guest experience

The upgraded system delivers several measurable benefits for the campsite:

  • Around €7,000 per year in energy cost savings, thanks to peak shaving and smarter tariff use

  • Much lower dependence on an unstable grid, with better protection against damaging voltage events

  • Cleaner, quieter power for guests, in line with the campsite’s nature-oriented positioning

  • Remote access and intelligent control, so the owners and installers can monitor performance and adjust settings without being on site

Instead of fighting against a weak grid, Camping Blue Rooster now uses a smart solar-plus-storage system to turn that grid connection into just one of several energy sources.

BasenGreen / BasenPower commentary: why this project matters

For BasenGreen and BasenPower, this project is a textbook example of how campgrounds, holiday parks, and rural hospitality sites can move beyond simple on-grid PV and build true energy autonomy:

  1. Daily-cycling storage as a core asset
With 24 BasenGreen 6 kWh batteries, the campsite can cycle storage every day for self-consumption and peak shaving. That plays to the strengths of high-cycle-life LiFePO₄ technology, instead of using batteries only as emergency backup.

  2. Multi-phase, modular architecture
The three-phase Victron MultiPlus-II setup shows how modular inverters and batteries can be scaled to handle high seasonal loads – from showers and kitchens to EV charging – without relying solely on the grid.

  3. Smart load management unlocks extra value
By connecting EV chargers and a 2,200-litre hot-water tank to the ESS, the system uses excess solar to deliver tangible, guest-visible benefits: hot showers, vehicle charging, and a more resilient site, all powered by the sun.

  4. A replicable blueprint for other sites
Many campsites, small hotels, and rural businesses face similar problems: weak or expensive grid connections and growing electricity demand. The Blue Rooster solution provides a practical blueprint: combine quality inverters, robust LFP storage, and intelligent control to stabilise the site, cut costs, and upgrade the visitor experience.

At BasenGreen/basenpower.com, we see this case as proof that smartly designed storage systems are not just technical upgrades – they are business upgrades, turning unstable infrastructure into a competitive advantage for hospitality and tourism operators.
